How it works

Attainment = actual ÷ target · Progress from baseline = (actual − baseline) ÷ (target − baseline)

Attainment against a target is the headline, but it is often misleading on its own: if you started the quarter at 60 and the target is 100, being at 84 is 84% attainment and 60% of the distance you actually had to travel. The baseline field is what separates those two readings. It works for lower-is-better targets too — set the baseline above the target and the progress figure still reads correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Why add a baseline?
Because attainment against zero flatters anything that did not start at zero. Moving from 60 to 84 against a target of 100 is 84% attainment but only 60% of the journey.
Does it work when lower is better?
Yes, using the baseline. For a cost target, set the baseline to where you started and the target below it; progress reads correctly even though attainment does not.
Should I use it for a whole scorecard?
One KPI at a time. Averaging attainment across a scorecard produces a number that hides the one metric that is failing, which is usually the one the meeting exists for.
